Millions of households having rifles and pistols is not a regulated militia.

Worth bearing in mind we could readily have firearms until Hungerford and it was more tightened up after Dunblane. You could even buy them from the Littlewoods catalogue per week.

You just needed a firearms licence from the local police station, be over 14 and pay 35P (same price as a Dog License). I had one.

They asked what you want it for and you just said shooting things.

I didn't know the age limit was as low as 14. But it was just shotguns wasn't it?

Yeah it was. With the intention they were used for hunting and sport. You still can if you're a member of a gun club.

You had to be 21 for a hand gun licence. Perfectly legal before Dunblane.
