My beautiful dog is starting to act old. He is having trouble jumping up on the sofa like he used to. The though of loosing him is horrible, he has been my best and most loyal friend for 11 years and I can honestly say I love him like family.

I don't think you can really take other's experiences, it might almost become a self fufiling prophecy. If both of you are happy that you can make it work there is no reason it shouldn't mate.
