Will be buying a Maiden ticket for Aberdeen next weekend. Fed up travelling for gigs just now, had a look through all the up coming tours on the gigs/tours section and there is not one single date in Scoltand outside of Glasgow for any of these listed tours. On some nights there are 3/4 different touring metal bands playing Glasgow, crazy amounts of competition! Yet it's neighbouring city and the capital, Edinburgh, with the same greater metropolis population these days of 1.5 million has not a single touring hard rock/metal band playing! (Glasgow has a bigger inner city pop of approx 600,000 compared to Edinburgh's 500,000).
I have friends in Aberdeen in Edinburgh who have been going to gigs for years and a couple of them have never seen a metal gig in their home towns!
What little creeps through does seem end up in Aberdeen like Maiden and Motorhead (first visits in over 20 years) though apart from Fury UK tomorrow there is nothing else on the horizon. Back in the day every touring band played both Glasgow and Edinburgh with generally an Aberdeen and Dundee date thrown in as well. From my near 30 years gigging experience in Scotland I would say the metal popultations of the 2 main cities are pretty similar so I am a bit baffled that when the whole scene rekindled after the early/mid 90's crash only Glasgow dates were restarted when the scene picked up again? I know a lot of people are getting very peeved off by always having to travel/stay over/take days off, myself included as it is pretty impossible to do a midweek gig coming down from Aberdeen and weekends throws up accomidation costs (unless I don't drink and drive the 160 miles back after the gig).
