As a serious connoisseur of alternative or 'underground' music since 1967 I reckon it's lamb of god.....(and Machine Head and Pantera not far behind). For variation of tracks, musicianship including vocal prowess, and grasping serious political nettles in the lyrics

I could see an argument for Pantera, due to the impact they had on the sound and direction of mainstream metal. However, most people on here would think that impact as predominantly negative.

You think Pantera are largely responsible for brutalising metal? I've noticed that a lot of the Millenial generation of metal fans don't seem to think that melody is important, especially when it comes to vocals.

They made the 'chug' more important than the melody, that's for sure.

Death - 7 albums all amazing, early albums influential to a whole genre even if you don’t like death metal you would probably like death as they are nothing too extreme.

As for what most say Metallica made some great 80s albums but nothing since, maiden churned out more in the 80s upto seventh son which are great so if it was down to them to it would have to be maiden.

I can appreciate that the music is tightly played but it lacks melody and variety and same for the vocals - all this 'brutal' attitude. Kreator do it better.

Slayer are better than Kreator by far in the thrash genre

The suggestion that Lamb of God could be broadly considered as the greatest metal band of all time is...staggering.

Everything is relative. Cultural significance is relative to the time when you where most deeply immersed within that culture- this is most likely to be your youth. Time change faster than people do, and LOG have been a big deal over the last decade, so I can see why younger people might choose them.

Fair play to you if that's your pick but none of them would get anywhere the top of my list

Do have to ask though, I can't stand Blythe's vocals; it's not just me is it? :?
