Again, not metal, but I always think Fish of Marillion is a superb lyricist. Some of the stuff on those first 4 albums is like poetry

To be honest, I don't really listen to metal for the lyrics. Especially extreme metal as you can't generally understand them anyway.

In days gone past I used to read the lyric sheets of bands like Maiden and Metallica, today the only "metal" band I can think of where I gave a passing interest was Ghost. Their use of satanic and biblical stories are quite interesting even if they are (and I'm still not sure) tongue-in-cheek.

For non-metal, Johnny Cash is another great story teller. I'm a big Johnny Cash fan.

Another vote for Martin Walkyier. Dani Filth's lyrics are good but it's more like poetry crammed into a song. And Dio! Contrary to what some think (or used to) he didn't write fantasy tales but used mythical imagery to represent real situations.
