Now that is staving off 'wage slavery', if you will. I do admire a thirst for knowledge but I can't begin to imagine why anyone would go on forever in academia in a non-professional capacity like that. Weird.
Re: What's upset you?
Experienced racism for the first time last week at the end of a night out with the pool team, and wasn't even directed at me.
One of us suffered a stroke a couple of years ago at the age of around 30, and now gets about with the aid of a walking stick.
Back to the story: Half of us had already got into the waiting taxi, with me, my Dad and my mate yet to reach it. At this point a passing girl (mid-late 20s) began yelling abuse, including "Fucking foreigner" and "fuck off", proceeding to grab his stick. When we got it back, she attempted to spit at him and stormed off.
I should point out that as far as we're aware, Dave is British, his parents are British, his ethnicity is British. This woman seemed to have found us in poor light and thought his stubble and expression at the time made him look middle-eastern.
Looking back on it, had my mood been totally different, been a little less hammered and the spit landed on me, rather than missing everyone completely, I may be writing this with a police caution. What is wrong with people like her?

Nothing more depressing than the sort of people who hate people on the basis of being foreign let alone being from a particular group. Haven't experienced that sort of insularity since I left hicksville for good.

Re: What's upset you?
I've experienced it both ways.
I've had friends who have had shite because they are foreign/coloured* and me getting physically attacked for walking ""in the wrong area" by others (even though I had lived there for years).
Arseholes are arseholes. Unfortunately there seems to be a lot of them around at the moment.
*Old term. But how else can you describe Black/Indian/Chinese/etc ?

Give it 5 years and that'll be offensive, too.

Calling them people erases their culture and ignores the discrimination they face everyday YOU RACIST.
Something about throwing them under the bus.

Aye.
But what is colour? I thought that white/pink/lobster red were also colours.
In other words, you can't win because everyone keeps changing the boundaries and old bastards like me can't keep up.

It's all utter bollocks. Apparently "coloured people" is deemed offensive, but "people of colour" isn't. If you're going to be that petty about the language, then it's almost worth going out of my way to use the term you find offensive. I have no time for that sort of nonsense.

The words may be similar but the connotations are very different. "Coloured" was the term used during Apartheid and segregation to describe non-white people hence why it causes offense. It's really not that much effort to use a slightly different phrase to not be an arse.
