This is why I took out Applecare on my iMac. While I can fix most things, it's useful to have for the more expensive items in case of a big whoopsie.

Depending on the hardware, you can repair almost everything yourself on some systems - you can find most spares on eBay for Dells, for example.

Guy at work has replaced the screen twice on a Latitude we have, and the keyboard on another. You can probably track down plastics kits for bodywork too.

And with iFixit providing instructions, it becomes fairly trivial. You just have to weigh up the cost and time benefits involved. Something older generally isn't worth it if you have the cover and can get what is an effectively subsidised upgrade. Which reminds me, I have a hard drive that's 2.5 years old... time for itt o have a catastrophic breakdown (rubber hammer).
