THE GAUNTLET
Clint Eastwood directs himself again, this time as a burnt out cop given the job of bringing a "nothing witness for a nothing trial" back to Phoenix by the Police Commisionner.
However, Mr Police Commissioner has a nasty little secret and the witness (Eastwood's former real life wife, Sondra Locke) is actually set to testify against him. Obviously, this can't happen so he sets about turning both the police force and The Mob on Eastwood, having only given him the job in the first place because he's certain the job wouldn't get done, but neglecting the one major rule of the 70s - Never bet against Clint. Even when the Vegas bookies have the odds stacked against him.
Locke is excellent as the feisty prostitute in Eastwood's custody, at one point even offering herself up for a spot of gang rape to save him from some unhappy bikers, while Eastwood himself is as rugged and gun happy as ever (although a bit dim-witted this time). There are leaps and lapses in logic at every turn but it doesn't matter in the slightest as you're rooting for Clint and his women-slapping, drink-grabbing, baddie-punching hands.
The ending of the film in particular is as brilliant as it is stupid, with Eastwood driving a bus through the streets of Phoenix while being shot at by every single police officer in the city as they try to stop him from reaching the courthouse. Cops let bullets fly from every possible angle and direction yet not one of them thinks to shoot at the tyres.
Still, for all of it's over the top action sequences, comic book villains, and casual violence towards women, The Gauntlet remains one of Eastwood's most enjoyable and underrated shoot 'em ups.

The other Guys, a fanatstic watch and shows some of Will Ferrels more darker humour. i dont think i could get tired of Mark Wahlberg shouting, "im a peacock let me fly!". although the best line came at the very end with "i hope you like prison.......and penis!".

RAVENOUS
It's 1847 and Guy Pearce plays a cowardly US soldier, who after escaping his mexican captors is sent away to a remote outpost in the snowy Sierra Nevada mountains.
Shortly after his arrival, a seemingly half frozen Robert Carlyle stumbles into the fort and proceeds to tell the handful of soldiers a story of how his group of travellers were led into the hills by a nasty army colonel, left stranded and ultimately forced to eat the bodies of their friends to survive.
After leading the soldiers on an expedition to the area where it all happened, it suddenly becomes clear that events may not have occurred exactly how Carlyle described them...
Remember when, for about a five or six year period, whenever you went to the cinema or switched on your TV, Robert Carlyle was guaranteed to be there, grinning back at you? Well, that's why I never bothered with Ravenous when it came out. A silly reason, I know, but I really was sick and tired of his irritating little scottish face by then.
Still, waiting for a time when Carlyleapolooza had died down to a trickle may have been the best decision as I was able to enjoy it without the nervous tic I acquired around 1999/2000.
Excellent performances from Pearce, Carlyle, and Jeffrey Jones, the supporting cast are all great (David Arquette managing to keep himself just the right side of annoying), and there's a great score from Damon Albarn(!) and Michael Nyman.
Lashings of blood and black humour make this the forgotten treat I hoped it would be.

And The Other Guys was shit.
Really, really shit.

See, this is all I heard from people for ages and ages.
And then I watched it. I don't get the hate myself. Fucking funny in parts, good acting, fuck yeah mark wahlberg, and some ridiculous action scenes.
Loved it myself.

WATER
(1985)
Michael Caine is the weed smoking, heavy drinking governer of tiny Caribbean island Cascara that, instead of oil, is discovered to have sparkling, lemony flavoured mineral water as its natural resource.
The UK government own the island, the americans own the drilling rights, and Billy Connolly is a rebel who wants to claim independence for the island.
It has some great performances (Leonard Rossiter is especially loathesome) and a witty script courtesy of Porridge/Likely Lads writers Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.
Made by George Harrison's Hand Made Films company, it also boats a musical performance featuring Harrison himself and Ringo Starr playing together, joined by Billy Connolly, Eric Clapton, and Deep Purple's Jon Lord among others. Caine himself goes about his business with the same laid back attitude of his character and is thoroughly enjoyable as the main lead.
