Mine too - in leafy Cheshire there was one attempt at a gang, calling themselves 'The White Knights' because they dressed in cricket gear!

There was always fights between different areas such as Garston against Speke or Halewood. But it was all mainly harmless fun with no weapons and only those wanting to get involved having a few punches at each other. More a meet up in an industrial estate car park at night somewhere.

It wasn't like the stuff that was going on in other areas later on where they were like American gangs using guns and knives. Such as when that young lad got killed when walking home from football practice.

Due to Gandalf's T'Roxy comment, I remembered there was a music programme on ITV called The Roxy, which then got me thinking about the music shows I remembered, obviously there was TOTP, but I also recall:

Razzmatazz on ITV
No Limits on BBC2
Whats That Noise - a kids music workshop thing, which always had Nigel Kennedy doing a slot from a New York phone box. Carcass were on it once aswell.
The Word - had CoC, Sepultura (with fans in a cage), Warrior Soul, RATM, L7
Noisy Mothers/Raw Power on ITV
In Concert - old UFO and Quireboys VHS concerts introduced by two drunks
TFI Friday having Slipknot's first TV appearance, plus FNM, Def Leppard, Mars Volta, Aerosmith and Napalm Death playing a medley of their shortest songs ( I also seem to recall a Zoe Ball fronted show where ND were in a race to put a kids climbing frame together!)
Hotel Babylon which seemed to have Anthrax performing every week.

Any more from that era?

Napalm Death were on What's That Noise? as well, with Craig Charles presenting. Classic.

The show with the two presenters messing about on late night ITV was Cue The Music with Mike Mansfield. The "idiots" were Tony Slattery and some other comedian that escapes me for now. *It was Richard Vranch.

List of shows here.

The Tube had numerous Metal bands on it. They actually had a Heavy Metal offshoot called ECT with live shows from bands like Judas Priest, Motorhead, Warlock, etc. Even has a dedicated Youtube channel.

Cheggers Plays Pop had a few Rock bands on it.

Number 73 had a few Metal Bands on it. Definitely remember Gillan and possibly Iron Maiden. Neil Buchanan from Marseille was the presenter.

Iron Maiden, Motorhead and Saxon were on Tiswas. I also have vague memories of Girlschool being on it.

I seem to remember occasional bands on Swap Shop, although they weren't playing live. Iron Maiden again?

Why Don't You Just Switch Off Your Television Set and Go Out and Do Something Less Boring Instead? :P

As someone that grew up exposed to basically only RP, that was a bit of an eye opener. Suddenly there were all these scruffy oiks on TV speaking in unintelligible accents

They used to pretend an invisible creature called Doris appeared whenever they said that name and they would start flinging themselves about the room as if they were being thrown.

There was a similar programme called Free Time a few years later and I think Elton Welsby was on it.

Something that Tet reminded me of with this. I'll reply in here as it's relevant to this thread.

Tet wrote:

Same here. I remember going to a friend's house up the road to watch the final, because they had a colour TV and we only had black and white.

That was about the time that we got our first colour TV. But my Nan had a colour TV about 4 years earlier as she rented. It's surprising looking back how many people rented TVs. Quite probably because it was such a big purchase back then and they constantly broke down, so they sent an engineer out to fix it.

I also remember her once telling the delivery fella, "I hope that's not a Japanese TV as I won't have any of that Japanese rubbish in my house".

She did have a brother who was a POW so that's hardly surprising.

We used to rent ours too, from Rumbelows. I remember the shiny new one that had a 'ready tuned for Channel 4' sticker on it. I also remember the paper shop starting to rent out VHS tapes and the machine to play them on 'cos no one had one.
