Not always true, some people do it and genuinely are ashamed of it, and do their best to hide it.

Being ashamed of it does not equal seeking attention.

I meant you were too quick to jump in and defend the people who DON'T walk around with massive great scars on their arms for attention. The attention-seeking group are completely separate from those who have reason to go at themselves with a sharp object, and it was those people who do it to look cool that were being laughed at.
