I'm sure it's not just me that thinks having a main stage announcer at all is a complete waste of time. When someone sticks up a 30ft wide banner that says "Nile", I don't need someone to walk on and scream at me to let me know that Nile are about to play.

True, but they tend to announce who's coming on next straight after the previous band have finished. So people who aren't too sure of the running order can plan to stick around, got to tent and/or drink several beers
