Woah, looks like we've got a Devin Townsend fan here. Nerd.

I personally prefer the F in the higher octave, but each to their own.

I think it was Koyunbaba that I first found the DADADF tuning with. I tried learning to play it once, but suffice to say I didn't get very far haha

I'm looking for a computer mic that can pick up sounds from around the room, mainly for guitar lessons. But what do I search for? What part of the microphone spec tells me the range that the microphone will detect sound audibly.

Obviously the cheaper and better quality the better, I'm not looking for a studio recording or anything. Just something to skype with. Anybody know where to look?

A room mic? I don't think they come cheap though.

I'm only looking for a small thing, when I search room mic I'm getting fairly techy type stuff. My mate has a built in microphone that picks thinks up from all over the place (I think it's built in, I know it's pretty small at least) It doesn't need to be super quality but obviously audible and clear enough

I haven't searched for anything yet because most microphones won't pick anything up after a certain range and I'm looking for one that can specifically hear my amp clearly from across the room at a sensible volume (so as not to break ear drums and shatter windows type thing - amp is about speaking volume atm)

What's your intention? Recording? Just use an SM57 but encase the amp + mic in a kind of enclosed cabinet covered in a duvet and blankets and shit.

Then you can crank up the juice on the amp and let the cabinet resonate the way its supposed to. Otherwise it'll just sound a bit lackluster.
Who the hell reads anything in sigs these days, unless it's an animated gif?

If you want something to use as an ambient microphone I think you're probably best looking for a condenser, and to probably an omni-directional polar pattern.

But if you're specifically trying to capture the sound of the guitar or amp, then you might be better with a polar patter with more directionality like a cardioid pattern.

A quick google throws this up which is cheap as far as mic's go. Pluss you can change polar pattern.

That said, I'm not sure without a sound card/preamp/DI box with phantom power, how you would get phantom power just going into a PC.

Behringer do recommend this though which should provide Phantom Power for you, and connect via usb to your pc

I don't know what you mic option's are in skype, but I would think it would detect the signal coming from the usb cable form the mixer.

Hope this is of some use. I'm sure Moonburp Alex will be along soon to either shit all over my suggestions or back me up

What I'm looking for is a basic microphone with an input for my desktop that can record sound of decent quality from across the room. Basically a bog standard mic, that can record from a fair distance away. I've got no idea how to search for one, so I thought I'd ask for suggestions. I already have an SM57 hooked up to a Line 6 pod for recording and such
