I'll have to check that out, heard Flayed Disciple sound checking a JCM 800 2 years back and it sounded like the warmest/playable tone I've ever heard. He was just running it through a condenser.

JCM800 is something I thought was the preserve of people wanting a classic rock tone but I might be wrong.

Anyway, here's a vidya of me playing through all the channels, starting with the cleanest to the dirtiest. Each of the 4 channels has 3 different voicings and I've made links to where each one starts. Probably not as good as it would sound if really cranked (and if I was in a better state when I was playing).

Cool demo sounds pretty versatile like you say.

JCM800 is a full on monster of high gain, its an ace amp. Wouldn't say it has the clarity of some of the other high end high gain heads, but it's fat and clear as hell.
