The Look of Love

Steve Coogan plays king of Soho sleaze, Paul Raymond. Focusing minimally on the creation of his porn empire, the film concentrates most of its attention on his relationships with his family, especially his daughter.

Coogan handles his role well, making you loathe him, pity him, envy him, and like him all at the same time. Having to side with a main character who walks out on his wife and son to be with his mistress, before sleeping with anything with a pulse and taking enough drugs to drop an elephant, was always going to be a tall order. And although you're hardly pumping your fist for him (wow, that was a poor turn of phrase considering the subject matter), you do actually feel sorry for him when it matters.

Full of very good performances, guest cameos, tits, bums, and more overgrown bush than a pensioners back yard, it may be crude, but it also has a heart.

7/10

Just re-watched District 9 for the first time in ages, as I'm looking to see Elysium tonight.
Forgot how good it is! Shame there won't be a sequel for a long time :(

Well the director is in huge demand. It's not so much him not wanting to do it he just doesn't have the time yet. I think he has at least 2 more films to make before D10 is even a possibility. Maybe they'll work the time difference into the story.

Does there actually need to be a sequel?

In a way, no. Because District 9 is strong enough to stand alone. But I also want to see more of the prawn, and find out what happened to Wikus.

As for the sequel, Blomkamp has said he wants to do it, but also that he doesn't like the hollywood system of locking into one movie while working on another, so I really don't think it'll start until he's finished with (what's listed as) his next movie, Chappie, which is set for 2015.

Saw Jurassic Park in 3D IMAX. I'll accept that the 3D was a bit dodgy in places, but aside from that, it's a masterpiece that shows it has barely aged a day in 20 years. I did see it the first time around, it's always been one of my favourite films and I'm glad I got the chance to see it on the BIG screen again! Perfect!

Saw Elysium last night. Entertaining, but ultimately disappointing.

Elysium looks awesome from the trailer. Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, the maker of District 9. I'm just worried that having bigger names attached to it than D9 did won't do it any favours. :P

So, ended up seeing Alpha Papa for a third time this weekend. It's still funny.

I need to see it so badly. But I'm literally the only person in my friendship group who even knows who Alan Partridge is. Hell, half of them think it's the name of the man himself, not the character.

Alpha Papa is only showing once a day at 10pm near me this week, looks like I may have to wait until the DVD. Twat, I was really looking forward to that too! I saw Kick Ass 2 and The Wolverine today. KA2 was great fun, not sure why the critics have been frosty towards it. Not as great as the first but I had a lot of laughs with it. The Wolverine was OK but towards the climatic fights I felt like I was watching a film I'd already seen.

Casablanca followed by Heavens Gate at the cinema. The former good, the latter good if not slightly flawed.
