I think people are giving Ridley Scott too much credit with a lot of these things. He didn't create Alien...he didn't write Alien...in fact as far as I can tell looking at IMDB he has nothing to do with the Alien franchise except directing the first movie.
The only two people who've been involved since the start are the writers Ronald Shusett and Dan O'Bannon, both of whom were involved in the AvP films and neither of whom were involved in Prometheus, O'Bannon because he's dead and Shusett presumably either wasn't asked or wasn't interested.
I agree with what has been said elsewhere in this thread and thought Prometheus had a confused and contradictory plot. It lacked tension. It lacked characterisation. It lacked a decent screenplay, placing characters in ridiculous situations and suffered from terrible dialogue delivered by badly.
Plus points, the cinematography was beautiful, the CGI was really good for a change, and Fassbender was great. I personally wouldn't watch it again.
