I'll believe it when I see it. It's been "getting a sequel" since it first came out.

The whole misleading sequel thing is down to people taking the mock trailer at the end of the first film as a genuine trailer. This latest news might be a bit more legit. I prefer a good gap between sequels anyway. Too close means too rushed

I appreciate Jupiter Ascending is in the list by default, but The Avengers? I get different people like different things, but that was almost unbearable and I am genuinely perplexed by anyone enjoying it.

Watched Poughkeepsie Tapes again, and god damn I love that movie. Creepy as all hell, and perfect balanced as a mockumentary and movie due to the "We found all this dudes horrifying home videos" sub plot.

I loved Age of Ultron, enormous fun. To be honest I've enjoyed all of Marvel Studio's comic book films, I find them generally witty with a good amount of heart for popcorn blockbusters. I'll be interested to see how this holds up to rewatches, only seen it the once, but looking forward to the blu ray!

Coherence

Real low budget, exploration of ideas kinda sci fi. Only about 4 locations in one film, mainly takes place in one, but does so much with it. Don't want to spoil much, but a comet flies overhead at a dinner party, the lights go out on every house in the street except for one and they got investigate.

I really didn't mind Pixels. Quite enjoyed it on a very basic level.

A lot of people seemed to take issue with the fact that it doesn't seem to have a documentary level of accuracy.

It's one of those weird things where people have selective subjective suspension of disbelief. We can suspend disbelief when it comes to spaceships firing lasers in space in Star Wars, but yet in Pixels people seem to take issue with the fact Q*bert can talk, and paper boy didn't come out until after the capsule was sent into space, despite the fact you have a 50 foot video game characters descending from space being fought of by the military with light cannons. You've got to have some perspective sometimes I think.

I think a lot of people need to justify not liking something and in doing so get overly pernickety in that justification.

Everyone should watch Chef. Such a good film, ultimate food porn, just great in general :3

Finally got round to Lost River.

I quite liked it in spite of it's flaws. I reckon it'd be up in the top 10 this yearf or me.

Pathology - Bad people doing bad things and yet one of them gets revenge on the other and I think he's supposed to be the protaganist? Shite 5/10

Henry Potrait of a Serial Killer; Immensely unsettling, doesn't overdo it with the gore, just great in general. And tits. 8/10

Just watched American Beauty for the first time.

I'm wondering if watching a film on a Sunday night is such a great idea. It's not something I've often done, just because it can feel a bit jarring with the mental involvement of watching a film just before a typical Monday. Hard to explain.

Harbinger Down

Once upon a time, the stupidly talented special effects pairing of Tom Woodruff Jr. and Alec Gillis (Aliens, Alien 3, Tremors, Starship Troopers) had a dream about making a horror film featuring only practical creature effects rather than cheap looking CGI.
Well, thanks to a Kickstarter campaign, Harbinger Down is the result of that little fairy tale and the results are a slightly confused mixed bag.
While the monster effects are certainly devoid of CGI tampering, the rest of the film is littered with it, and the film still ends up looking every bit as cheap and wobbly as you'd think they'd have wanted to avoid.

Although the two brains behind the enterprise are obviously leaders in their field, their lack of actual directorial experience is shown up here just as clearly. Watching directors like Cameron, Zemeckis, Verhoeven, and Mike Nichols in action is obviously a vastly different experience than doing it yourself.
Although the basics are there and it still plays better than a lot of films by SyFy and The Asylum, the script's shortcomings and the inexperience of most of the actors are highlighted at almost every turn. What's worse though is that, as special effects designers who have worked on some massive movies over the years, you would have thought they would have learned by now when it's best to keep things hidden and in shadow, and when less is more. Nope. From the moment the creature appears, the camera lingers on every single detail - showing off the effects rather than creating an atmosphere or letting the story tell itself. Every shot of the creature screams, "Hey, look at me! I'm real, you know!!" when in fact you shouldn't even be thinking about things like that until afterwards. You're taken out of the film with almost every gratuitous close-up as you focus on the foam latex, rubber, and gelatine based products used in the process, and ultimately (not to mention rather ironically), how fake they actually look.

The story is simple enough. Basically, it's The Thing meets Alien meets Peter Weller underwater fish-beast story, Leviathan. On a boat.
Some fishermen and scientists are busy fishing and sciencing in the Bering Sea when they come across the body of a Soviet cosmonaut, encased in ice since the '80s. The body looks to have little parasites living in it and so lots of sciency things are said and sciency decisions are made. Goody Scientists want to save the world, Baddie Scientists want to get rich, Sinister Russian Types want to kill the Americans, and the giant mutated fish-monster wants to kill everyone. Some things never change, eh.

A very depressing film brightened only by sci-fi stalwart Lance Henriksen showing why he earns the biggest money in films like this, delivering his lines like he actually believes in them, no matter how ridiculous they might sound. His performance alone makes watching the film almost worthwhile.

Cinema day yesterday:

Bad Education Movie: 3/10 I knew it was going to be shit before I even went in, but it fit in with my times. Not seen the show, but thought I'd give it a go anyway. Predictable gags, tries to be shocking, but fails massively.

Man from U.N.C.L.E: 8/10 Heard mixed reviews about it. I actually really enjoyed it. I was a fan of the original show when I was growing up (re-runs obviously). While it wasn't ground breaking, it captured the tongue-in-cheekness of the show. It looked nice, I enjoyed the chemistry between Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer. It was also the only Guy Richie film since Snatch that I've found watchable (still think he peaked at Lock Stock). Only downside is that a major client went down at work, and since I put the infrastructure in, I had to take a call half way through the film missing about 15 minutes May go see it again tomorrow..

Absolutely Anything: 6/10 Didn't really know anything about this before going in. Was a bit silly, but had a few decent gags, and Kate Beckinsale is always watchable

Trainwreck: 8/10 Totally predictable plotwise, but not too sentimental. Amy Schumer is very likeable, and the chemistry was there with Bill Hader. Some good gags, some even cutting close to the bone, without delving to the depths of the sewers like Bad Education.

Fantastic 4: 1/10 Dull, humourless mess of a movie. What little plot there was made no sense. No attempt at character development. No chemistry between the leads. Nothing memorable about the 'characters', ridiculous dialogue. Felt like a bargain bin B movie rather than a major studio film. Whoever allowed it to be released should probably be fired.

Avengers Age of Ultron.

Other than suffering towards the end with Transformers fatique, where too much is happening for too long and you kinda switch off, really good. Continues to build on the universe and just generally fun.

Terror Toons

I have reached new levels of trash. I thought the 3.5 knock off horrors were bad but this is next level. It constantly feels like it's going to turn into a softcore porn but never does, except for a shower scene at the start, despite being filled with porn actors. Huge chunks of the film take place in "Cartoon world" which is bad green screen backgrounds with clip art characters running away from the eponymous Terror Toons. There's random bits of really good gore special effects, intercut with terrible terrible other effects. At one point they interact with the Devil "No, not cartoons, TERROR TOONS" and fuck man it's fascinating. I don't even know how I feel about it. It's so shit but it's also so good and if you replaced the soundtrack with something darker it'd make a good lynch movie and just watch it.

0/10 or 10/10 I don't know.
