Need some advice from someone knowledgeable! (Jim?!)

As I said in the pissed off thread, work is making me miserable. I know it's not professional, but what would be the consequences of me going in on Wednesday, picking up my things and telling them I'm not coming back?

My other plan is to get a doc appointment for tomorrow and ask them to sign me off with stress. I genuinely think I need to get back on antidepressants now anyway, but the idea of going back in keeps making me burst into tears, especially with the idea of working with that slimy guy. If I say it's caused my depression to come back, I'm working over 60 hours weekly which is destroying me physically as well as emotionally, and i'm being sexually harassed - do you think that will be enough for me to get signed off?

What is your work's notice period (says in your contract if insure)? You said you handed your notice in so you're already serving it.

The worst they can do is give you a poor working reference. And these days all that amounts to is "Reason for leaving: resigned" along with your absence history (if any).

I wouldn't worried about being 'fired' in your situation - a lot of shit is going down and it sounds like the whole kitchen is in tatters - you can explain that in your next job interview - you can say you abandoned ship because of the vacuum in morale and you simply weren't experienced enough to handle running the place in that situation (which is legit, you aren't - only someone with several year's experience can handle fallout like that).

As long as you tell your doctor all of that, not skipping any details, then you will probably get signed off.

That's really reassuring - thanks. My contract says I need to give 4 weeks' notice which I've given as I said, then again they sacked someone on the spot a couple of days ago despite his contract saying he needs to be given a weeks' warning.

Can't let you do that Star Fox.

You're not allowed to give a bad reference. The closest they can do is give no reference.

I know, hence I said "All that amounts to...".

It's basically a glowing reference, proof you worked there or refusal, but you need to be a completely douche to have a reference refused.

Usually all a employer wants to know if you really were the CEO of PwC like you claim on your CV.

To be fair, I think at this point "No reference" is the equivalent of a bad one.

It's nonsense. You can give a bad reference if you choose. However, there is no upside to doing so and potential downsides if the employee decides the reference was unfair. So it's not in any company's interests to give a bad reference. Note that it's also possible to cause problems by giving a good reference, if the future employer decides it was unrealistic and that it caused them to offer a job to someone that turned out to be unsuitable. Thus many companies now have a policy of only giving a reference that gives a job title and confirms that a given individual worked for them between a given set of dates.

Sitting here watching a Youtube video of an armadillo dancing to Billy Jean.

Time to get a job, I think.
