I don't know the system in Ireland. But always make sure you get your stamps. I know plenty of people who never bothered for various reasons and when it comes to retirement they haven't got enough to get a full pension.

By the time we retire we'll be 78 and the state pension will be 45p a week.

Also, your local MP will come around once a week to staple a badger to your pants.

Wait, what are stamps, how do I get them, why do I need them, how do they affect my pension.

Stamps were abolished in 1975. If every payslip you have has an NI deduction alongside your Income Tax deduction, and you have claimed jobseekers when you weren't earning then you're golden.

If you go for months without having a job or being on jobseekers, the tax system sees a deficit in your NI contributions, and you'll usually get a letter about it.
Who the hell reads anything in sigs these days, unless it's an animated gif?

People still call them stamps though.

It's alright I'm fine. I was just in the threshold before they raise it to 67. Whether I live that long is debatable though.

Your first reaction is to go on the dole? Dude...

So I should live on nothing until I do find a job? Great idea!

Or get any job rather than leeching the state until you find an 'appropriate' one?

Any paying job is a decent paying job, hence the need to acquire jobseekers until I do get any job.

I leeched off the state for like 6 months because I didn't wanna touch retail.

Now I'm in a job I enjoy, learning new stuff, getting a decent wage.

No regrets.

A lot of the jobs my course involved require internship first, and for some reason many of these internships only seem to pay on top of dole, rather than instead of it.

Implying you can even get any job immediately with ease. Dunno where you live but in Nottingham it can take hundreds of applications just to grab a quick minimum wage job...
