I know that there are pronouns that the French use that are about levels of formality and familiarity, but I can't remember exactly what they are and what situations they're used for. I think it's Tu and Vous, but there may be others and like I say I can't remember what the exact difference is.
Any help?

Vous is polite and tu is informal.

Cheers for the help. :)

Is it entirely about formality though? Like if you met a random person in the street and were talking, would you use the same form as you would for speaking to a good freind? Even though that situation isn't formal, it's not familiar either.

I know the rules for this sort of thing are insanely complicated in some asian languages.

Well vous is plural and tu is singular but best to use vous with people you don't know just to be safe. General rule is that if they tu you then you can tu them back. If it's someone you know then you can tu them.

In France, vous is generally used in formal letters and to someone older/superior to you and tu is for people around your age or younger.

Kind of this... but if it's family/friends then i've always heard people using tu even if there's a huge age gap.

I just use vous (though there aren't many people younger than me) just to be safe.

Screw it I'll just put formality and say that respecting your elders comes under that umberella term. It's not like I need to be really specific for an off the cuff example.

Thanks guys. :)

You're not gonna offend anyone really if you use either in informal conversation.

Yeah true, it's not like you're talking to the imaginary french king.

It not that I need to speak to anyone in particular (I can't speak french for shit), its that I'm writing about the benefits of being multilingual and if you're not and use an interpreter for whatever reason, then they may assume which pronoun you are wanting to use for a certain situation and subtly alter the meaning. Whereas if you're bilingual you can decide for yourself which one to use.

French may or may not be a good example of this but I have a better grasp of it than I do Japanese.

How much does it cost to call/txt Italy from one mobile to another?

EDIT: I should probably clarify and say how much extra does it cost? Like extortionate, not much more, whatever.

Went to a house party last night, too much weed and much alcohol means I dont remember the party, or how I got home...just know I woke up on my sofa at 8 this morn.

I think I need to calm down a bit for a while.

Not really looking forward to being dragged along to ice skating. Had it not been for a mate's birthday I wouldn't even bother.
