I think usually (certainly with hourly paid jobs like retail and pubs) you have to get the area manager's permission for anything over 2 weeks (if so, you'd probably need a damn good reason for it, like getting married and your honeymoon or something). I could be wrong, but I think that's what we have to do at Wetherspoon, and I think it was the same at Somerfield.
Pretty stupid IMO, as surely your store manager would be in a better position to say whether they'd suffer from you taking the time off?

oh yeah I know I won't be able to take it all off at once.

it's just if I don't use it I'll just end up losing it in April and I can't take any time off until mid January now. So I'll probably end up working my normal hours for a few weeks and getting paid for not being there the rest of the days

My manager does that when we have a load of holiday left. He says we can either take the time off, or just get paid for our rota'd days off.
Only thing is, my hours have dropped so much that my holiday days are worth less than 3 hours each. So, I don't want to use them until my hours go back up, but I really want them to put me a few on each week to bump my pay up.. decisions, decisions

Everyone where I work is just going to lose their holiday hours, because the manager decided to keep us cripplingly understaffed at all times so nobody can take even half their holiday.

7 staff, one of whom only does two shifts a week, for a place that's open 14 hours a day, seven days a week. The sooner Tesco muscles it out of business, the better.

After the events of last night I'm really tempted to go home today, a week and a half early. But I've put so much effort into the game of thrones feast we're having next week that I don't want to miss it. Bah.
