People from families who have been voting labour since the great war while handily ignoring 13 years of "labour being more tory than the tories" are now terrified by how close they came to being an electoral irrelevance if scotland had voted the other way, handing the tories a permanent strategic advantage in every part of the country that isn't a defunct coal mine.

The Tories would have got a substantial boost if Scotland had become independent, but it's not quite big as some have made out.

Without the Scottish vote (on balance, 39 extra labour votes), Labour would still have won convincingly in 1997, 2001 and 2005.

The problem going forward is that there's really not much differentiating between the three main parties at the moment, based on their recent record.

The Tories are the same as they've ever been.

Labour have started making the right noises on issues like the NHS and the Spare Room Subsidy (aka The Bedroom Tax) but whether they'd actually honour these pledges is anyone's guess. It's not clear how much they've actually changed since they lost power. New Labour was virtually indistinguishable from the Tories to the extent that Margaret Thatcher once stated that her greatest achievement was "Tony Blair and New Labour - We forced our opponents to change their minds."

...and the Lib Dems talked the talk in 2010, but betrayed most of their principles for a junior role in a coalition government.

It's hard to tell how much effect the aftermath of the Scottish referendum will have, but at least it's got people talking a bit more about politics.

I'd have to say that I do. Although a part of me wanting to see Scotland vote no was to spite that odious slimeball Salmond, I have to admit.

Also, a fairly substantial minority of Scots who seem to blame the English as a sport for any perceived slights or misfortune nearly put me off but I don't like to tar everyone with the same brush.

Just noticed, the poll as it currently is, is 12/30 for yes/no - which is 40% - not a million miles off the real referendum result!

I think a lot of people have been very harsh on Clegg and his party; Labour were kaput in 2010 so a LIB-CON coalition was the only real possibility and there was an urgent feeling that we needed economic stabilisation. The LDs have probably actually punched above their weight given the FPTP system they got in on.


Does anyone know what the support in Scotland is for leaving the EU? If we have a ref. and vote to come out but there is the opposite opinion in Scotland it could reignite the independence issue.

The LDs have probably actually punched above their weight given the FPTP system they got in on.

The Libs could of kept out of the coalition and let the Tories have a minority government. Then they could of joined with the other parties and voted against anything that they disliked from the sidelines. Thereby forcing the Tories into an earlier general election. Instead they decided to prop them up for a few lesser cabinet posts. In the meantime losing virtually all their grassroots support (especially students), most of their council seats and control of councils such as Liverpool. They won't get that back for a very long time.

Unlike the Yes voters smashing windows with No posters in them then. That's the reason the opinion polls were out. Everyone kept their mouths shut when asked what they were going to vote because of the thuggish behaviour of the Yes supporters.
