Short answer: both.
There was an 8 bit version of Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Alex Kidd (stupid of me to think it had a the in the middle of it) was also on both. I was going to link wiki articles but this forums way of processing such things is nothing short of retarded. Alex Kidd as a sort of easter egg type thing if you hadn't put a cartridge in may have been Mega Drive though.
I never owned a Mega Drive which may seem a bit of a shock, because virtually all of my mates had one. My next console from there was the N64. I was going to buy* a Sega Saturn but was put off because it was poorly supported. I bought the N64 on the strength of Goldeneye and Ocarina of Time.
Then later Donkey Kong and Majoras Mask with that £50 expansion pack. No one ever understood what it did. Im sure we probably do now, but at the time it was some kind of witchcraft. Extortionate witchcraft at that.

Yup, built in games, though Alex Kidd was built in on the MasterSystem II.
The Mark One MasterSystem had a snail maze game built in.
Who the hell reads anything in sigs these days, unless it's an animated gif?

Re: Nostalgia Thread
My Megadrive never had any built in games. It just came with a Sonic The Hedgehog cartridge. To which I added a few games, mainly the EA Sports ones (European Football, PGA golf, Madden, Senna, Lara).
I only bought it as something to do to keep me out of the pub. That worked....

I'd created a partially false memory of this because I'd imagined Pam Stephenson was in it:

Not really. It wasn't called Mr Soft for nothing.

I had a screwball today. First time in fucking ages!!! I was so hungover I couldn't bring myself to eat the chewing gum in the bottom. The ice cream did me no favours, basically undid what the hench breakfast I had eaten had accomplished. Ice cream on hangovers seem like a great idea at the time too.

I have a thing going on about Star Wars yogurts, and how nobody but me seems to remember them. With all the new film hype, asda are stocking a new Star Wars yogurt. Still, nothing like the original, which did exist;
