Correct. They smell worse the younger they are, but female rates don't tend to smell at all.

A bit like humans then, really

Erich Alfred Hartmann (19 April 1922 – 20 September 1993), nicknamed "Bubi" by his comrades and "The Black Devil" by his Soviet adversaries, was a German fighter pilot during World War II and is the highest-scoring fighter ace in the history of aerial warfare. He claimed 352 aerial victories in 1,404 combat missions. He engaged in aerial combat 825 times while serving with the Luftwaffe. During the course of his career, Hartmann was forced to crash-land his damaged fighter 14 times. This was due to damage received from parts of enemy aircraft he had just shot down or mechanical failure. Hartmann was never shot down or forced to land due to fire from enemy aircraft.

He scored his 352nd and last aerial victory on 8 May 1945. He and the remainder of JG 52 surrendered to United States Army forces and were turned over to the Red Army. In an attempt to pressure him into service with the Soviet-friendly East German Volksarmee, he was convicted of false war crimes, a conviction posthumously voided by a Russian court as a malicious prosecution. Hartmann was sentenced to 25 years of hard labour and spent 10 years in various Soviet prison camps and gulags until he was released in 1955.

He's a bit of a hero of mine actually, if it's cool to have heroes that fought for the other side and all that. Either way, hard as fucking nails

He battered the communists, thats good enough for me! I am disgusted that the Yanks handed him over the the Soviets though, many German forces fought their way across to our forces in order to surrender and deliver refugees out of the Soviet zone. The escape from Beelitz hospital being a very good example.

Lis and Rich - I did say "tend" not to smell. The couple I've known never smelled at all so I assumed that was the norm.

Hannah, please don't take this in a rude way as it's not meant to be, but I think someone who has kept rats will know more about their general conditions than someone like me or you that has only seen them for periods of time :)

Yep, but the person who kept those rats I've spent time with has also kept them for years and said that females not being smelly was the norm, so it's not unreasonable that I'd respect her opinion on it and take it for fact. She's a qualified animal behaviourist so I listen to everything she says about animals, she knows a lot.

Maybe she's just never had smelly ones *shrug*.

My great aunt Bessie was a witch apparently. Awesome. Wish I could remember more about her except what her house was like, that she was practically deaf, and always had viscount biscuits.

The rats my old ginger Tom cat used to bring home always smelled....usually cos he used to hide them somewhere and I only found them a couple of days later....mind you, the cat was known as
"The Fierce"....hardest cat I've ever known
