If you're not feeling like you could handle a relationship I'd say it's more sensible not to ask her - if she said yes, it's not very fair to then turn round straight away or a little later and say you aren't feeling emotionally capable of handling it.

It reminds me of the times I've told women in bars how beautiful they are then immediately left or said something like "oh fuck you're hot" or even "I know you wont be interested, but I've just got to say you're totally stunning". They tend to look amused but annoyed that I didn't say something less gay I suppose. Maybe no one else dared hit on them that night and they thought I was all right, so disqualifying myself in such a gay way was stupid.
