Unrequited love can be worse for the object of that love than it is for the one doing the loving.

The thought of putting someone through that has stopped me from asking female friends out on more than one occasion. At uni, I told a girl that I was really good friends with that I loved her on several occasions. I really wanted to be with her and it felt pretty horrible for me at the time. It was only a few years later that I realised how it must have made her feel - possibly worse than it made me feel - and I feel really guilty about it now.
