Re: The Relationships Thread
Fjar has terrible taste in music, and mine's is tonnes worse.
Who the hell reads anything in sigs these days, unless it's an animated gif?

This, but also this:

I think it's more the attitude towards music than liking all the same stuff that's important.

Absolutely. There's gotta be some stuff you can both enjoy and it's silly to conflate "they must enjoy music" with "they must like exactly the same thing as me"; this isn't about "they gotta like metal, GOSH!" but being of a broadly similar disposition. Besides, the more into music they are in general, the more overlap there'll be in taste. You work on that common ground, etc.
Re: The Relationships Thread
who isn't into music though?
Personally I'd feel uncomfortable playing music I liked knowing the other person listening wasn't into it.
...Apart from Toto, everyone gets large amounts of Toto exposure whether they like it or not.

Re: The Relationships Thread
Music is quite a big thing to me. Whilst I have a broad enough taste to overlap with most people, I'm not sure I could cope with being with someone for a long time where that overlap is very tiny. Going to gigs and festivals is also a big part of my social life where that other person may feel completely outcast from.
It was a bad enough in my last relationship where there was quite a large overlap (although her way of responding to the slightest bit of music with "What is that shit?" or "Turn that shit off" even if I played something she supposedly liked).

Re: The Relationships Thread
I honestly don't give a shit about music. Ill only bore her to death with what little I know about the subject. What's the point?
Re: The Relationships Thread
I'd give you a look of horror too, for seeing such a shite band

That comment can be read very diffferently than what was meant.
Re: The Relationships Thread
Its important to have things in common, but I don't think music has to be one of them.

Re: The Relationships Thread
Music in my current relationship has been extremely bizarre. Chris is hugely into music, but he loves house & techno - something I've literally had no experience of up until recently, however I find I like a lot of it.
In the past I did have a tendency to go for someone purely based on music taste, and I'm glad this time I've made a change. I still listen to metal but I'm far less involved in the scene, but at the end of the day we both open the other's eyes and are open minded to hearing new things. I don't think I'll ever have him attending a Bloodstock festival...maybe the odd gig!

Yup...he's a chef.
Re: The Relationships Thread
I've noticed most young chefs either listen to that kind of music, or really, really mainstream (Kerrang!) metal.
This applies to England and Australia.

Random trivia: Warrel Dane and Jim Shepherd of Nevermore are certified chefs. Maybe in America, cheffing is metal.

Re: The Relationships Thread
My sister's boyfriend of 8 years, who is absolutely not interested in metal, came with us to the Amaranthe gig in London. That. Is. Commitment.
Even Jim didn't go.

Re: The Relationships Thread
I once dragged a girlfriend (who was very much not a metal fan) to a Napalm Death show.
Fortunately, I've never had a girlfriend who's wanted to go to anything that I haven't wanted to go to, too

I wouldn't say I've met anyone like that but there are people who aren't really what you'd call 'into' music and listening to it (no matter how passively) doesn't seem to be a necessary part of them getting through the day/week.
