While this is true, it's easier said than done.
I can't go out and get a girl as I have damn near zero confidence.
My problem is that before I can ask a girl out or make a move, I need to feel comfortable around her. And to do that, I have to get to know her. Which lands me securely in the friend zone quite a lot.

Who's being pessimistic? I know I'm no oil painting but I have no trouble attracting women. Now if I could just meet one who wasn't either batshit insane, already in a long-term relationship/married (yes I do have an unfortunate tendency to attract women who aren't single, no I've never taken advantage of those situations - and on several occasions it's taken every last bit of my willpower!) or both then it'd be all fine and dandy.

Nah, long-term singleton I'm afraid. Been pretty badly burnt in the past and I have trust issues... and of course usually by the time I do actually trust someone then I'm normally in the dreaded 'friend zone'.
I'm not one to moan about it usually (not on an internet forum at least ) and I'm actually pretty happy with life these days for the most part anyway. I'll meet someone when I meet someone like, I'd rather be single and happy than stuck in a relationship I'm not happy with just for the sake of it.
