I finished 2001 a Space Odyssey and it was very good. Especially where Hal malfunctions and the Ending - also I like books with short chapters. If a book doesn't change topic in 40 pages then it's probably going to bore me. Short attention span I guess.

Stay well clear of Les Miserables.

Just finished John Wyndham's "Sleepers of Mars" and "Wanderers of time" and David Lee Roth's autobiography "Crazy from the heat". I'm now re-reading AE van Vogt's "The weapon shops".

Waiting patiently for book three of the Demon Cycle ( daylight war). Read the first two and end of book two ( desert spear) leaves you wanting more so high hopes it'll be a damn good read. Partly through reading life of pi as I wait for the bugger.

An interesting mix of titles for studying at home this week including Sexual Violence On The Jacobean Stage, The Origin And History Of Irish Names Of Places and about half a dozen different medieval bestiaries.

Is half of that book going to talking about fords and rivers? (I'm referring to the immeasurable amount of 'Bally' prefixes in Ireland btw, I lived near one in fact - the lovely backwater of ballygar )

Iain Banks diagnosed with terminal cancer and his next book will be his last. Not read much of his stuff recently, but The Bridge, Whit, Crow Road etc were all favourites at Uni.

Yeah plenty of Bally's where i'm from as well- Ballyhalbert, Ballywalter, Ballycranbeg, Ballygelagh etc. After leafing through about a third of it I could guess the meaning of most places without reading the entry because the most common prefixes of place names like Bally-, Kil-, Derry-, Carn-, Dun- etc all occur so often. A lot of them have interesting stories behind how the name came about though, and there's interesting patterns to where certain place names occur. Like around the border of South Derry, Fermanagh and Tyrone there's about 30 or 40 villages with the prefix "Derry-" like Derrylin, Derryvogie etc, but there's very few place names like that anywhere else on the island.
