Seems that everyone has a love/hate relationship with the Wheel of Time series. Personally, I never gave it a chance, I thought it'd be too cheesy.

I feel alot of fantasy tends to be a bit too.....shiny, for me. I like the concept, but it's never dark enough, and alot of the time it seems to be like a modern fairy tale where the knight in shining armor comes riding in to save the day just in the nick of time. (Says the guy with the forum name from The Dark Tower...)

Have you tried the Song of Ice and Fire series by George R R Martin? I don't think there's a single character had a happy ending in that yet

I've heard it mentioned but never looked into it, but that sounds much more promising. I think there's real potential to create some fantastic works, but it's difficult to take the cheese out of something as inherently cheesy that.

James Herbert - Haunted.

I love his books! Bought this from eBay for 25p
Some of his books can have too much fairytale kind of crap in, ie. The Magic Cottage.. quite lame but I read it anyways, but the ones without are cool. Even if he does go overboard with the sexual content in some..
Haunted is creepy though, despite being a pretty old book.

I think his rat trilogy books are the best for me, probably followed by The Dark, The Spear and I guess The Fog. Some of his recent works have been terrible though, which is shame. Still better than the tripe Stephen King writes though

The Dark is my fav! First read it when I was about 11 though.. And 48 was good too. I was disappointed with Once which is pretty recent, like I said, all magicy n stuff. Never got into Stephen King stuff, sounds shit!

Currently reading Devil's Brigade penned by George Robert Elford.

They are the memoirs of a former SS officer who's job it was to hunt partisans and, after WW2, his time fighting the communists in what was to become Vietnam as a soldier in the French Foreign Legion.

Anyway, the book starts at the end of WW2 and his groups struggle to get back to their homes in Germany and apart from these first couple of chapters, focus entirely on his time in the Foreign Legion. So far it has been fucking brilliant.

Finished The Path of Daggers, and am now taking a break from the Wheel of Time. It's doing my brains in. So much potential to be amazing...... so much failure to capitalise.

So I've nicked one of Alex's archaeology books, The Buried Soul: How Humans Invented Death. Borrowed it for a bit one weekend and actually enjoyed it, so I'm reading it to the end now

I suspect doing away with the great flowery highest-of-the-high fantasy speeches could have saved time too, but it's all part of the charm*.

*Says the girl who usually skips most of the singing, now she's read it umpteen times

Excuse the double-post, but I'm somewhat miffed. Decided to have a break from Wheel of Time after reading Winter's Heart, and I've been reading Alex's archaeology book.

I've just had a random flash of intuition and think I've figured out who some of the ambiguous "baddies" are, and also who a particularly important Black Ajah sister might be, though none of those identities have come in the books so far yet.

Bugger. I hate it when this happens, because I'm almost always right with it
