They also crossed my mind too. Didn't know they were even making new stuff.

The issue isn't really which extreme bands COULD headline but rather which ones would get to. I mean take At the Gates they've got a massive influence on death metal (and most forms of metalcore and deathcore), they've got history, songs a lot of people know and they can, have and do headline bigger festivals on the mainland than Bloodstock.

...but their current tour is in clubs and that simply does not bode well. This is the issue almost all extreme metal headliners face, they're very niche in the UK and regardless of if they'd likely play a blinding set if given the chance or not promotors won't take the chance.

Bare in mind Cannibal Corpse are one of if not the most commercially viable and well known extreme metal band on the planet and they're not even special guests this year. So lets look a little at the last few extreme bands to be headliners:

Behemoth - Headlined right after Nergal's high profile cancer struggle, plus their pulling out the previous time because he needed treatment.

Emperor - Influential band who hadn't performed or recorded together in what 6 years? and were only doing literally a handful of dates.

Immortal - Only really done festivals for years and never really play the UK

Children of bodom - More like mainstream metal than extreme metal anyway but even then they had to co-headline with Fear Factory.

and so on and so forth...BoA could book an extreme headliner but honestly who's going to fit their standards this time around? Unless they lower the standards to appease the faithful extreme fans who have no headliners to look forward to yet.

Which could well be why it ends up being a repeat. I can't think of any extreme metal bands capable of headlining that haven't already. But then I didn't think Behemoth were big enough...put them on and people will watch I guess. I've heard a strong rumour who the special guest is on the Friday but I'm under oath to say nothing. Tet should be happier with this one if it's true.

I haven't been told any specific names, but I was told that I'd love the Friday special guest and hate the headliner, so I suspect you're right about that.

I'm not gonna ask who it is, but can you let me know if it's another repeat? A recent one anyway.

Disappointing. My guess would be Kreator, although I'd hope for someone like Helloween or Blind Guardian.

I've been trying to think of bands I hate that are big enough to headline and bands I like that might be suitable as special guests. I'm genuinely struggling to come up with a headliner that fits that description. Special guests could be someone like Sabaton, Blind Guardian or Helloween.

I would of thought At The Gates would be a headliner too, and it is a bit strange that Cannibal Corpse aren't headliner material, they've got to be the biggest name in Death Metal, and would of thought they were bigger than Behemoth, I guess Behemoth have had more media coverage. Children of Bodom have been shifted down from headliner ranks now as well as Opeth, wonder if Immortal would be too. One of the headliners can be smaller though, especially with massive names like Rob Zombie

At The Gates are struggling to sell tickets for a tour that also has Triptykon on it. At a venue much smaller than the venues Saxon, Sabaton and Kreator are playing in Manchester.

Can't really see the point in bands like Cannibal Corpse headlining. They usually only play for about an hour or so when headlining their own gigs anyway.

Immortal headlining Friday with Sabaton as special guests perhaps?

Strange mix but I actually like both so would be happy if it was that.

Obviously not allowed to say who but do those ITK know when the announcement will be?

Ok definately not At The Gates then! Can't think of a better possible headliner than Immortal! Sabaton are about so very possible, reckon Blind Gaurdian wil be there though. Maybe we'll get a co-headliner
