Sophie stage headliners

Postby UnoriginalAlias » Tue Sep 09, 2014 4:30 pm

My personal disappointment with the Within Temptation headliner booking has made me think about the size of the bands Bloodstock has been booking as Sophie stage headliners. With the Main and Sophie stage headliners now clashing, and the Bloodstock attendance steadily growing, I think it'd be good for the festival and the festival-goers for the headliners on the Sophie stage to be slightly bigger than they are currently, and maybe representing metal subgenres which work well in an enclosed environment and aren't usually very well represented at Bloodstock.

A lot of people currently disappointed by the WT booking (whether you like them or not, it's undeniable that a lot of people are disappointed) may be appeased with a strong Sophie headliner on the same day, I'm thinking bands like Sleep, Electirc Wizard, Neurosis, Insomnium, Godflesh, Gorguts, Spirit Caravan, something like that. It seems perfectly plausible, especially with Bloodstock growing every year.

Some may say that the existence of festivals like Desertfest and Temples festival eliminates the need for sludgier/doomier bands at Bloodstock. I think that's a tad unfair considering pretty much every other metal subgenre is represented at bloodstock despite other specialist metal fests existing in the UK, and a sophie headliner would serve as an alternative to a mainstage band of a different genre. Plus, those sorts of bands work well in tents, Bossk in 2013 were brilliant and worked well in the Sophie tent.

Basically, this is sort of a plea to the organisers to book a good WT alternative

Turning the Sophie stage into a Death/Black metal stage would be A-OK with me.... but it would be a terrible move (Obviously using Black/Death as an example here)

Adding a few stoner/doom/sludge bands on Sophie wouldn't necessarily mean turning the entire stage into a solely stoner/doom/sludge stage. These subgenres are currently underrepresented at Bloodstock.

A good number of those bands are too big for the Sophie though (and several have already played the mainstage).

I would like to see some more 'known' bands like Atlantean Kodex, Desaster, Mourning Beloveth, Nifelheim, Cancer, Tankard etc being booked for the Sophie though

This year's Sophie headliners were all miles better than their Dio counterparts, long may this continue! Splitting clashing genres should always be the aim of the organisers as all it does is piss people off.

Cancer on the Sophie stage? Yes please.

As for the announcement, I am not exactly wowed by it, but it isn't bad either. I'm just glad Opeth aren't taking up a headline slot.

Sticking a death/black metal band on the Second stage might be the way to go with Within Temptation. I can see it being someone along the lines of Hellyeah again though.
BANDS I LIKE FOR BLOODSTOCK!!!

Yet Within Temptation are taking up a headline slot :?

Opeth are far more suited to Bloodstock and should have been headlining instead.

Put Electric Wizard opposite WT. All else is invalid.

WT are a fair bit bigger than Opeth, they almost sold out Wembley arena and played 3rd down on main at Download this year, so it makes sense that they're playing above Opeth. I agree Opeth are more of a bloodstock suited band, as I pointed out in the WT announcemet thread many people here and on facebook are unaware of how big WT are, many people few them as a 'cheap' headliner. This seems to indicate that they don't have much appeal for the average bloodstocker, despite their size.

Also, while many bands I listed may be 'too big' for Sophie as it is currently, they're definitely not ouside of Bloodstock's price range, I think they should splash out a little more for a band like Sleep or Electric Wizard or Gorguts headlining sophie, especially as an alternative to a contentious headliner like WT.

I'd imagine they are probably quite expensive to book compared to other previous headliners ironically  I think if anything they are probably the big money headliner this year, so can't see the bookers throwing most of their budget on one day when they want to spread the quality out to maximise weekend tickets :|

I reckon Judas Priest will be the sunday headliner still and will probably cost more than Within Temptation

Amusing that you slag off the WT announcement for not being metal yet have Anathema on your list - they haven't made a metal album for around 15 years and their current drippy crybaby rock is more akin to Coldplay or Elbow...
