Like some have mentioned before, I think Bloodstock is in a tricky area at the moment, size-wise, when it comes to headliners. I personally can't think of too many bands that would appeal to the core but be sizable enough to headline, bar Judas Priest.

I would take a slightly different take and try for "event bands" or groups of bands and try and appeal on a kind of theme basis:

Friday

Nightwish
Kreator
Sodom
Destruction
Tankard
Threshold
Morgoth
Orchid
Morgue Orgy

Saturday

Savatage
Meshuggah
Between the Buried and Me
Cattle Decapitation
Kamelot
Fallujah
Bell Witch
Pallbearer
Meta-Stasis

Sunday

Judas Priest
Autopsy
Blind Guardian
Death Angel
Katatonia
Exhumed
Sylosis
Skyforger
Lazarus A.D.

Sophie Stage Headliners:

Mayhem
Cult of Luna
The Protomen because no where else will bring them over here and I wanna see them so bad!

Because there was already an existing thread. I've merged the threads and killing_time will be added to the pint list. Again.

Having not weighed in on this yet...

My taste and musical knowledge is not conducive to me putting together a main stage lineup that would be suitable in this day and age, so here's my theoretical Sophie Stage lineup. Tried to get a nice mix of bands that would be popular with the community, but concentrate on the kind of things the main stage will enevetably be lacking.

Friday
Om
Vektor
Necrophagist
Human Fortress
Heidevolk
Falconer
Aeon Zen
Akb'Al
Bongcauldron

Saturday
Neurosis
Vader
Pain
Devourment
Firewind
Demonic Ressurection
Iron Savior
King Goat
Bongzilla

Sunday
The Melvins
Taake
Tankard
Kamelot
Origin
E-Force
The Levitation Hex
Splintered Soul
Fury

Sadly no longer an option. Although they still exist, they're now a studio only band, having played their last live show at PPUSA last year. Which is a real shame. I saw them twice last year, and those were among the best live performances I've seen from them.

Too big for the Sophie stage, I'd have thought. Certainly bigger than several main stage bands from both this year and previous years.

Vader and Tankard are far too big to play the tent.

Both are well overdue an appearance though....

I don't follow death metal overly much - what kind of size venues do Vader play?

Vader play the Underworld in London. They've played here in Plymouth a few times and attract around 100 people or so, which is less than the likes of Deicide or Napalm Death (who drew about 450 each) and Nile (who drew about 250-300). I'd imagine they'd either headline the Sophie or be given a mid afternoon main stage slot.

Vader played in Nuneaton ffs. Whats the cap of the SL stage again because the Queens Hall is a pub with a large enough attic to put a stage in. If capacity was 100 id be surprised. And it wasn't packed in there either. Vader would be a classic SL band imho.

You can't really speculate how well a band would suit a stage by how many they attracted in Plymouth or Nuneaton. :P

For the record Vader packed out The Masque/Barfly in Liverpool (600 capacity) a couple of times. Getting a far healthier turn out than many other bands of a similar ilk. And they always get a decent turn out in Manchester.

I know it's a flawed argument, but both bands always get a reasonably high position on equivalent festivals in Europe.

I would expect them to play the main stage but headlining the Sophie isn't out of the question. Generally, London's venues are a good barometer for how big a band are and Vader play the Underworld...and never sell it out as far as I'm aware. I'm surprised they attract bigger crowds in Liverpool than London but I guess there's not much else to do up there :P

Yes. It's not 100% reliable, because it's governed by other factors such as whether the band in question is playing elsewhere in the UK. I know a hell of a lot of people coming down for Avantasia tomorrow, for example, because they're only doing a single gig in London. But many of the regulars are going to see Blind Guardian outside of London, so it'll be interesting to see what attendance is like for the London show on that tour.

But as a rough guide, I've found London attendances to be a pretty good guide, and I see enough shows that I tend to have a reasonable idea of how popular bands are. Which is why I have to laugh at the people that say that melodic metal isn't popular. The melodic metal gigs in London tend to be far better attended than the shouty band du jour that will invariably be booked for Bloodstock.
