Metal 2 the Masses 2018

Postby Haldamir319 » Tue Oct 17, 2017 9:20 pm

Sheffield's has moved from The Mulberry Tavern to the Record Junkee. Same promoter though, which is good.

I believe we're targeting around a 40 band tournament, though that may have to be increased. Looks like at least 16 bands have signed up in the first 8 hours!

Manchester looks like it's going to be the same setup as last year, 8 4-5 band heats, then 4 band quarters, semis and final. I'm seeing the promoter in the pub for board gaming tonight, so I'll see if he'll divulge what the numbers are looking like. Hopefully they'll manage to fill all 40 slots this time around.

I can speak only for Manchester, but our local scene is pretty light on Black Metal. When we do get some at local shows, they've usually traveled in. I'd be very surprised if we get even a single band in the heats unless someone from another region decides to enter here for some reason.

Yes, me too. But one of their members works behind the bar at the venue, so I could see them being forced to enter somewhere nearby like Burnley to avoid accusations of impropriety.

They could enter here if they wanted, I'd guess. I think one of them is from around here or went to uni here or something.

Our tournament format is being re-vamped.

Assuming we get the 40, there wil be:
Round 1 -
8 groups of 5.
Outright winners progress directly to semi finals
2nd, 3rd and four wildcards (the four highest scoring bands that haven't qualified already) will go into Round 2

Round 2
4 groups of 5
1st and 2nd goes through to SF

Semi Finals
4 groups of 4
Winner of each plus 1 wildcard (highest scoring non qualifier) goes to the final

Final
5 bands.

I believe we are sticking with the system we used to score the semi finals last year. Ie audience list the bands in order of preference to assign points. Audience makes up 1/3 of the final score.

If I'm still in Reading when it all comes around then I'll try to check it out.

This has been confirmed, albeit with the weight of the fan vote changing over the course of the tournament:

Round 1 - Fan vote counts for 1/2 score
Round 2 - Fan vote counts for 1/3 score
SF - Fan vote counts for 1/4 score.

I helped the organiser Jake with the actual drawing of the heats last night (dice determined random heats for the win). I believe he is posting the full line-up shortly. I believe we have six returning bands (the 5 finalists that weren't Ba'al, plus 1 other), which means we have 34 new bands! :O

So they don't have Google where they come from to make sure there isn't an established band with the same name?

We've got a much smaller event this year in Manchester, 6 heats to 3 semis to the final (rather than 8, 4, 2, 1 as we had last year) with 26 bands entering. Drawing for the heats happen later this month, but here's the band list and how they describe what they play:

Moose - Alternative Melodic Groove Metal
Crescent Halo - Heavy Metal
KING BEEF - BEEF ROCK
Barbarian Hermit - Sludge/Stoner
Arcadia - Nu Metal/Rap Metal
Stormrider - Heavy Metal
Hamerex - Heavy Metal
Trading Arms - Slamming Brutal Some-Sorta-Experimental-Metal
Upon This Fate - Groove Metal
Saurr - Alternative Metal
God Shaped Devil - Metal
Def Goldblum - Rap Metal
Storm Of Aura - Heavy Metal
GAIA'S STONE - Progressive Metal
Chiasmata - Progressive (progressive what?)
Twisted Mentality - Shock/Metal Horror
Armageddon Stereo - Rap/Metalcore
Skeletal Damage - Thrash
C:/dos/pun - Djentstep/Intel Pentium Quad C:/ore
Dead Retinas - Punk/ Hardcore
Aftermath Eternal - Metal
Völniir - Extreme Metal/Black Metal
Manifolds - Metal
BAD EARTH - Hard Rock
40,000 Leagues - Melodic Metal

No Death Metal and only one Stoner band (which is really strange seeing as that's a big scene here). We do get some Black Metal this year though, which was totally absent in 2017.

Of these Barbarian Hermit and Def Goldblum are bands I really like, so I'll certainly be pulling for either of them to win. Skeletal Damage are very good too, and they've made the finals 3 years in a row now (twice in Stoke, once here in Manchester), so I'd be pretty happy to see them make it as well.

"C:/dos/pun - Djentstep/Intel Pentium Quad C:/ore"

Erm, what? The pretentious band name/description would put me off before I'd even walked through the door.

Have Skeletal Damage played before? Or maybe one of the smaller stages at DL? I know the name from somewhere...

Really surprised at the lack of stoner bands, the scene is pretty big in Manc as you said.

I think we ended up with another healthy turnout as it turns out that West Yorkshire don't have their own tournament, so bands from there either come to us, Manchester or Selby depending on where they are based.
