Bit of an odd one in Manchester last night, of the 4 bands supposed to be playing Heat 4, only 1 actually made it, with 3 new bands being added who were not in the original drawing (there seems to be a lot of that going on this year, there are 2 replacements in next week's as well making 6 drop outs from the original 30 bands so far).
Mouth in the South were the band who managed to survive from the launch night, and they're fine. Every time I see them I leave unable to form a real opinion, they're just solidly OK.
10 Volt (who apparently have just changed their name from Halfway Home, who I've also never heard of before) are very much a rock band rather than a metal one, with a nice edge of funk to it. I quite like them, but they're a little out of place.
Primordial Swarm describe themselves as "blackened slamming deathcore", and are just as awful as you'd expect. Naturally they win.
Palas Athena are relatively new, having formed out of the breakup of A Clockwork Opera a little while back. They play nice proggy symphonic stuff, and I think they're really very good. Should have won as far as I'm concerned, but they go through and that's good enough for me. The only big asterisk I have against them is that they're still looking for a drummer and 2nd guitarist so 2/5ths of the band are on a backing track, which doesn't quite sit right with me. Really hoping they manage to find some personnel soon.
