Glad you're enjoying them. I must say, I wasn't sure how we would fare this year - a fair few of the more popular local bands opted out from entering this year (for a varied reasons), so wasn't sure how it woulds draw. But it's been good fun so far, with some nice surprises.

That's made me think - I wonder if the running order for the New Blood stage is solely based on the region? I'm only pondering this as I believe the Sheff winners have had the same slot (or near as damn it) both years we've had a comp - that is, mid-to-late afternoon on the Saturday.

I'll probably head to the Glasgow final to watch the invariable shit throwing that goes on. The problem is Glasgow is the only venue that does the entirety of Scotland so every band under the sun applies, and the majority of heavy hitters or bigger bands stopped applying several years ago due to being a bit jaded with the whole process.

Manchester heat 2 was last night. Didn't bother with it because I've seen Crescent Halo, God Shaped Devil and Twisted Mentality multiple times, and never really enjoyed any of of them.

I had One Goddess down as a bit of a mystery band since I'd never heard of them before the day of the heats being drawn, and then subsequently could find nothing out about them. Turns out they didn't show up with no communication whatsoever. Did they even really exist in the first place, who knows.

God Shaped Devil went through in first place, with Twisted Mentality as runners up, which is how I would have called it based on past experience.

Unfortunately next week's heat 3 clashes with the Pathfinder game I run, because the line up for that one is much better.

Heat 1 of the Norwich competition tonight and I've got a couple of mates in Rats Packing Grenades who are first up. Report to follow later.

Brief summary of tonight's first heat of Norwich's MTM - Project Mork withdrew on the day which left us with 3 bands. First up were Rats Packing Grenades who walk in Kyuss/COC/Monster Magnet territory. Next were Blackwater Creek who are the most established band of the 3 and put me in the mind of Black Stone Cherry or Alter Bridge. Probably more Ramblin' Man than Bloodstock. Last were Knowpeace who describe themselves as hardcore, but I thought were more deathcore. Not my sort of thing, but they were decent and most people present seemed to get into their set.

The winners were Blackwater Creek. I was a little surprised, but wish them well for the rest of the competition.

Manchester heat 3 was last night, which I couldn't make again. But Stormrider and Reptilian Humanoid went through, which is the call I would have made based on seeing all of the bands before. Kind of a shame to see Argesk get dropped, being the only Black Metal band we've had enter in years, but you can only take 2.

IL and Bogwych sound like my kind of nonsense, I'll keep an eye out.

Bit of an odd one in Manchester last night, of the 4 bands supposed to be playing Heat 4, only 1 actually made it, with 3 new bands being added who were not in the original drawing (there seems to be a lot of that going on this year, there are 2 replacements in next week's as well making 6 drop outs from the original 30 bands so far).

Mouth in the South were the band who managed to survive from the launch night, and they're fine. Every time I see them I leave unable to form a real opinion, they're just solidly OK.

10 Volt (who apparently have just changed their name from Halfway Home, who I've also never heard of before) are very much a rock band rather than a metal one, with a nice edge of funk to it. I quite like them, but they're a little out of place.

Primordial Swarm describe themselves as "blackened slamming deathcore", and are just as awful as you'd expect. Naturally they win.

Palas Athena are relatively new, having formed out of the breakup of A Clockwork Opera a little while back. They play nice proggy symphonic stuff, and I think they're really very good. Should have won as far as I'm concerned, but they go through and that's good enough for me. The only big asterisk I have against them is that they're still looking for a drummer and 2nd guitarist so 2/5ths of the band are on a backing track, which doesn't quite sit right with me. Really hoping they manage to find some personnel soon.

Reading the review I love the sound of the bands that went through. The bill needs bands like them.

Both the heats winning bands sound good but I really like the sound of the 2 bands from heat 8
