Deformation of Man won the Sheffield competition. Was an immense final, and a sellout show. Rob's also put 2 bands forward to potentially play the Jager stage as well.

I plan to spend more time at the New Blood stage this year (especially on Sat), looking forward to giving bands a chance. I usually sit outside Lemmy's bar and wander over if stuff takes my fancy but I want to be more organised and make a proper effort.

I always check them out beforehand and factor in the NewBlood and Jaeger stages to my weekend....never been disappointed yet.

Manchester's 1st semi final was on Sunday (Clashmute, Psython, Twisted Mentality, Primordial Swarm), I didn't bother going because I really don't like 3 of the bands. Kinda wanted to go down and see Psython since I haven't before, but it really wasn't worth it.

Clashmute went straight to the final, Primordial Swarm are going to the run-off for the last spot.

I shame about Psython; they are always ace and came really close to winning our last year. I suspect we'll get them back here next year.

Manchester's 2nd semi was last night featuring Stormrider, Frozen In Shadows, Pallas Athena and Sauur. Really well attended again, I think by this stage we can safely say the move to Sunday nights is a good one.

Stormrider were on good form. I think they're the only vanilla Heavy Metal band we've got this year, so it was good to see them getting the crowd going.

I've now seen Frozen In Shadows a few times and they're still my pick to win the whole thing, another great set from them here.

Pallas Athena were also superb once again. Still hurt by the fact the drums and one of the guitars are on a backing track. Happily, they announced that they've found a drummer shortly after the performance, so they're on the way to fixing that.

Saurr were fine. Not really my thing, but went down an absolute storm in the room.

Saurr went through in first and go straight to the final, Frozen In Shadows will be going to the run-ff for the last final spot. A real shame to see Pallas Athena and Stormrider dropped, but these things are always going to occasionally result in some really stacked heats. Hope we get them both back next year, Pallas Athena in particular I think are going to be a real force with a full line-up.

The last of the Manchester semi-finals was on Sunday, with 40,000 Leagues getting the spot. Wasn't able to make it, but I've really enjoyed them previously and thought they got absolutely robbed last time they competed when they didn't make it past the heats.

Our playoff of the 3 semi-final runners-up is now confirmed as:

Primordial Swarm
Frozen In Shadows
Existential Dread

With Ba'al as a special guest headliner (so I'll certainly be doing down for this one). I'm pulling for Frozen In Shadows to win both because I really like them, and because the other 2 are bloody awful slam nonsense.

Yikes. If Frozen In Shadows are the best of the bunch, things are in a bad state indeed. They were dreadful at HRH Vikings.

Existential Dread took the last of the final spots in Manchester, which gives us a line-up of:

Clashmute - Metalcore
Saurr - Metalcore
40,000 Leagues - Melodic Metal
Existential Dread - Slam/Beatdown

We've also got PIST, The Brood, Alpha Omega and Democratus playing sets to make it an all -day affair.

The Merseyside final was last night and it was a blast.

Midnight Prophecy (power metal) Came runner up and Marw (blackened sludge) were the winners.

Got it in before Gandalf. :)

I saw that Saurr won the Manchester one, and the Black Falcon have got a Jager slot from the Leeds one. Not had a proper look for the full results yet. BF's album is pretty good, so will watch them if there's no clashes.

I didn't even know about it until virtually the last minute. Been out all day so a bit pissed.

We were going over the water to watch a Classic Rock/Metal band called The Bite in the Swinging Arm. But it was cancelled anyway and it ended up being a Free tribute band.

Not a bad night and good to see the local "scene" is healthy. Personally I thought Forlorn Hope should have won. A decent Traditional Metal band and the first time I've seen them in the flesh. One to look out for.

They did indeed. I spent most of yesterday wanting to die, it was a good night.
