Generally speaking I agree with you. I still get to check out new bands when I get to gigs early enough to catch support acts, through word of mouth, via Planet Rock (for the more rock-based stuff obviously), or if I read a review that catches my eye online or in Metal Hammer, etc. so I'm not completely oblivious. It's just that Bloodstock have, in my opinion, made such a waste of their 2nd stage by packing it full of unknowns it makes me less inclined to wade through 3 days' worth of bands on 2 stages just to find one or two I might like.

And it's actually drained my enthusiasm to the point where I just don't give a shit anymore and I'd rather prioritise my 'dead time' hanging out with people instead. Sad in a way, but if the festival did a better job of utilising their 2nd stage then I'd be more inclined to make an effort, but if the organisers can't be arsed, then neither can I.

In fairness, I usually end up catching one or two extra bands across the weekend beyond my 'must-sees' due to just wandering around, being in the arena already waiting for a band or by seeing something someone else I'm with wants to see. I guess I'm just highlighting my general sense of 'meh' with the use of the other stages.

Fair enough! I get a bit of OCD around potentially missing great unknowns, so will definitely try and listen to at least a song by every band booked.

I very rarely know Sophie bands before they're announced and this is going back years rather than a recent phenomenon. Discovered loads of bands I now really like that I first heard of due to being announced for the Sophie stage. Bloodbound, Whispered, Alien Weaponry, Avatar (though they ended up on main to cover for Graveyard they were booked as Sophie), Courtesans, Deals Death, NeonFly, Planet of Zeus, Fury, Desert Storm, The Heretic Order (might've been Jager first but were still unknown to me), Voyager.... I expect this year will be no exception.

People's preferences are what they are. I don't see the appeal in paying a lot of money for a festival, only to spend it sat in the campsites talking and drinking. But plenty of other people get great enjoyment from doing just that.

I'm a little less obsessive than I used to be. One year, I made it to Sunday morning without missing a band, seeing at least part of a set from every band on every stage. That killed me, though, and these days I compromise. I still see 50+ acts over the weekend. But that's down from the 80-100 I was managing at one point.

That's impressive but wouldn't work for me. I'd be annoyed every time I left someone I was enjoying early to end up stood in front of someone shit. It's why I'll listen to a track of every band before the fest so know what I want to see. I typically see around 50-60 bands across the weekend, most of which I enjoy.

I generally listen to at least one song from every band. Usually there's a good chunk of bands I do know and bands I don't getting booked for it, and a good mix in both groups of bands I like and bands I don't. This year, I know a few, but that's not because they are sizable, but because they are smaller bands that play local festivals (or have played before), and those that I don't know I listen to and don't really like. I'd say in general it's one of the most disappointing second stage lineups for a while, which is a shame as lately it's been getting so much better. Hopefully its just a blip for them.

The lineup is still my main priority when it comes to Bloodstock and it always will be. I wouldn't go if I didn't feel I was getting value for money in that department but with around 14 bands I actively want to see, I do feel that more than justifies the ticket price - it's just that the majority of those bands are either on Friday or Sunday.

But there is still a social element of the festival for me - I'm not gonna miss a band I want to see just to hang out in the campsite but at the same time, I'm not gonna miss out on socialising with friends just to go watch a band I don't care about simply for the sake of either getting my numbers up for the weekend or 'supporting the scene' or whatever.

Aye agree with you there. Normally see 20-30 bands over the weekend and throw in a few bands at random when I have a gap free to see something new/different. I'll normally give a listen to a song by each band (if possible) and go from there, though half the time if they haven't got my attention the first time I'll have forgotten who they are come festival time and it feels like a new start.

Add in the socializing factor and normally end up with a decent weekend

Definitely:
Sabaton
Powerwolf
Children of Bodom
Metal Church
Death Angel
Anthrax
Swallow the Sun
Scorpions
Queensryche
Dee Snider
Soilwork
Ross the Boss
Grand Magus

Likely:
Tesseract
Parkway Drive
Dimmu Borgir
Eluveitie

Maybe:
Soulfly
Cradle of Filth
Hypocrisy
The Lazys

Some of the Sophie bands sound interesting; especially Wheel, 3 Headed Snake, and Crescent; but until I've seen the official clashfinder I won't be able to decide which lower stage bands I can watch. Sadly some of the interesting bands will probably clash with some of my essential, must-see acts.
