Going back, for a second, to The Wachowskis..

Cloud Atlas - A great idea & a good book, ruined by stupid accents & laughable makeup. For every beautiful piece of scenery, intelligent idea or stylistic cgi shot, there is a ham-fisted counterpoint that entirely counteracts any attempt at subtlety. Started & ended average, Hence a score of 5/10.

I really liked Green Lantern. I know nothing of the character's comic book mythology or anything like that, so I just took it as a fun sci-fi/action adventure movie. Sure the CGI could've been better, the plot was unoriginal and the film fell for almost every cliche available.. but it was a laugh.
For me, it's a good switch-your-brain-off movie.

My thoughts exactly, the CGI was fantastic, the acting was not terrible at all, and unlike the comic book purists who cry at the first change to anything, I took it as a stand alone movie based loosely on that universe, just like Nolan's Batman films

I really think you must've been watching a different film to the rest of us...the CGI was terrible and the acting was awful. I stopped reading comics when I was 10, so I dont care if they changed anything...all I know is that as a movie it was boring as hell and a complete mess of a 'plot' and should have been a straight to dvd bargain bin.

Still...look at the brightside it's not as bad as Skyline, which is the film I now judge all bad films against!

Martin Campbell is a decent director when he wants to be...Both his Bond films were good, as was Mask of Zorro. Vertical Limit, however, from what I remember was rubbish and forgettable, as was Edge of Darkness!

I think Edge of Darkness is a textbook example of the dumbed down remake - they tok out all of the interesting minor characters and turned them into bog standard henchmen which removed all the ambivalence and mystery from it. What's left barely lifts the film above moronic.

It's never a good sign when the first line of defence for a film is "The CGI was fantastic".
For me anyway, when I watch a film, its aesthetics are never what I want to mention first. Unless it's Avatar of course, in which case, that's all there actually is to it.

It doesn't only apply to films either.
A mate of mine went to see Nickelback a few years ago. Paid out £50 plus travelling expenses and when I asked him what it was like, the first thing he said was "Fantastic. The light show was brilliant". I asked him if he liked the songs and he replied "The sound was amazing". Yes, but what about the songs? "They even had a guest appearance by somebody". That's nice, but what about THE SONGS? "They did two brilliant covers". What about THEIR songs? "Er... not that great really".

They are a phenomenal live band quite frankly, and you get your money's worth

Total Recall extended director's cut

I enjoyed this more than I did in the cinema, still a pointless remake and the different ending is subtle but very telling, looks amazing, stand our performance from Kate Beckinsdale
