Yes, it does seem excessively harsh. But then if it's not, teams won't have as much incentive to make sure it doesn't happen again. Still, it's the team that should be punished for an infringement like that, not the driver. I'd have said grid penalties for both drivers would make more sense. Not least because I can just imagine the look on Vettel's face if that happened

Ouch. The best part of a whole second clear. Impressive stuff, but it doesn't make for good racing.

Yeah, hopefully the others will catch up in Europe. As the BBC were saying, it looks like they may even have a bigger advantage than Red Bull ever did.

Goddam it just got spoilered. Unfortunately it's mostly my fault for being in the thread, I forgot it was highlights on the BBC on not live meaning I thought the race hadn't happened yet. Bollocks

Have I just been watching a different race to you? Yes, the Mercs are laughing, but boring?

This a thousand times. Mercs actually like their cars race each other. Fantastic.

Heh. You and me both. But what a fantastic race. It was pretty dull for the first half an hour. And then it all came to life. Great to see plenty of inter-team racing. Hamilton vs Rosberg, Pérez vs Hülkenberg, Massa vs Bottas. All great. I think Hamilton's a bit of a dick, though. In the fight between the two of them, Rosberg was leaving him room and Hamilton was cutting Rosberg up at every opportunity.

Still, the Mercedes set a best lap that was 1.7s quicker than any other team. That's an astounding margin, and has got to be worrying for the other teams.

Welp, more of the same but good to see the red bull's catching at least. Shame Ferrari are this far back, I'd have liked to see raikonnen get in the mix a bit more but that's not gonna happen anytime soon at this rate (that said in the 8/9 years I've been watching properly Ferrari almost always do badly to start then play catchup afterwards).

Really need Rosberg to win soon though, hopefully he'll do it at Monaco as he's more than capable of beating Hamilton there.

Moto GP: Marquez makes it 5 poles and 5 wins out of 5. It's not like F1 though where his team are significantly better than everyone else, he's just that much better than everyone else on the bike.

I wouldn't be surprised if in 10 years time he's wiped all of Rossi's records off.

So, this year I'm stepping up to a class called Top Fuel. It's the pinnacle of the sport, with the fastest accelerating cars on the planet. On Saturday, I did my licencing passes that were necessary to allow me to race in the FIA championship (the drag racing equivalent of F1's SuperLicence). Here are a couple of videos:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x96sPY_0pI

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WunI4b-Cl6o

With that second run, I became the 5th quickest land based Briton in history :-) The first round of the championship is this weekend.

Some car facts: 8000+bhp, 0-100mph in under a second, top speed of 300+mph, acceleration is around 5G on launch and -6G when I pull the parachutes to slow down after the run, each launch effectively creates a minor earthquake measuring around 3.2 on the Richter scale.

Watched all 5 MotoGP highlights on ITV now. Dear me, if that's the quality of commentary for the highlights, I feel sorry for those who bought a BT package for it. Bring it back to the BBC :(

Great to see Lowes doing well in World Superbikes.

Marquez: Bloody hell, what a rider! Great to see Rossi back in form!

BTCC: I'm impressed with Andrew Jordan, Gordon Sheddon and Jack Goff. Nice to see Colin Turkington back at the front. I'm amazed Thruxton haven't put in a more effective barrier on that corner. Any one of those crashes could have ended up so much worse. A wall of loose tyres doesn't seem to be particularly effective at absorbing the energy of a 140mph touring car safely...

F1: Well, I think we have this year's champions. It's fortunate that there's enough going on behind them to keep things exciting
