It sounds to me like she's feeling guilty about stuff and is trying to push you away so she doesn't have to deal with that guilt.
I've done it myself, not consciously, but yeah, it's pretty shameful.

Well if that's true (and even if it isn't) I want to try and keep a friendship because we enjoyed each other's company loads and really clicked so perfectly together, but in a few months she's going back to Spain to finish her degree and I'm going to Germany so I won't see her for at least a year (she's probably doing a masters back in England after), meaning I've only got till June/July (minus a month for easter while she's away) to get back in contact or I'll probably never see her again.

We have been incredibly close friends for the past 6 months so I know him inside and out, and he's since told me about a crazy sounding ex girlfriend which he thinks is why he freaked out before after I told him about my feelings.

While I do hope it all works out for you I can't shake the feeling you're going to be fucked over in a few months. And of course he's going to sound like a complete Fud to us when you've told us about his, as you said, issues. As everyone else said just tread carefully.

Seriously Annabelle, I do wish you all the best - but after that six months or so of 'bliss' when this guy, who has done nothing but come across as a total douchebag, has got bored of playing his Mr Nice Guy games then I can see you getting hurt again. I would love to be proved wrong though.
