End of Decade list(s)

Postby houston4044 » Mon Dec 23, 2019 2:59 pm

Might as well put it up now as it's getting to that busy time of year again. Figured it'd be easier to put it in one thread than several separate ones.

As many as you want from any year in the decade and more than one per artist if you want. Thought about adding a festival line up bit as this is a forum for a festival

Will add mine when I get chance, the gigs and fests stand out easy but hard to rack my head around the sheer volume of albums I've heard this decade.

This was really difficult.

For me, this decade has been more about going back to the 70's and unearthing bands like Blue Öyster Cult and Budgie. However, there was a lot of very enjoyable new music made over the last 10 years too.

Its notable that there are a lot more commercial bands on this list that there would have been on the previous decades list. This is most likely a sign of old age: I just don't spend the time to dig up stuff like I used to and I'm not at all bothered if I'm listening to the 'right kind of metal' anymore.
It also may be reflective of the maturation of 'The Heavy Metal Industry' as a distinct and powerful entity within the music world. Yes it's always been separated to an extent, but it really is an insular economic bubble now. The 'big' metal bands formed FOR the industry, as much as by it... And it works, my list is half full of them.

This is the list as it stands today

1) Nightwish - Imaginaerum (2011)
2) Moonspell - Extinct (2015)
3) Mgla - Exercises in Futility (2015)
4) Septicflesh - The Great Mass (2010)
5) Metallica - Hardwired to Self Distruct (2016)
6) Sabaton - Carolus Rex (2012)
7) Machine Head - Unto the Locust. (2011)
8) Volbeat - Seal the deal & Let's Boogie. (2016)
9) Andrew W K - You're Not Alone (2018)
10) Ghost - opus eponymous (2010)

Best gig was Metallica in Prague 2014. Amazing.

Best festival, could well be Bloodstock 2018, Nightwish where incredible.

Gigs of the Decade:
NIck Cave and The Bad Seeds - Manchester MEN
Iggy Pop - London Albert Hall
Monster Magnet - The A&M Years gig - London Forum
Hell - Derby Assembly Rooms
Soundgarden/Stooges - Hyde Park (it was pissing down - saw them in Manchester Apollo and if it had been the HP setlist in that venue, it might have been my favourite gig ever)
Chris Cornell - Manchester Bridgewater Hall
Yawning Man/Sons of Alpha Centuri - London Borderline
Threshold - Chester Live Rooms
Church of The Cosmic Skull/Vodun/Boss Kelloid - Manchester Ruby Lounge
Walking Papers - Manchester Night and Day

Worst - Queens of The Stone Age, Iggy Pop, Hives - Finsbury Park
You'd think that experienced event organisers wouldn't screw up as much as this, but a underpowered PA made all the undercard barely audible from beyond half way, using the TUC's trading arm to run the bars and, probably due to the glorious weather, over half of the staff not turning up meant 90min queues snaking around the back of the venue, and then kettling people in an alleyway at the end due to exits not wide enough.
