And no, definitely not any romance nonsense, 'tis good solid fantasy all the way.
Literally, the first time I read them I got through the Farseer trilogy in about 3 days... and that was around school! I just couldn't put them down.

Fool's Errand - Robin Hobb.

Assassin's Quest made me cry, so let's see how far my softy tendencies get through this series

I betcha you won't get all that far... Fool's Errand has some pretty sad bits, and you wait 'til you get to Fool's Fate... that's one of the very few books that's ever made me cry!

There's romance involved glancingly like in a lot of fantasy, but its a side element to the main story which is about as solid a fantasy yarn as you can get . Well and truly recommended

I read Cloud Atlas by David Mitchell recently and have basically been unable to bring myself to read another book out of fear that nothing will ever match it.

I remember people mentioning this book, so here's a tidbit of info:

"US broadcaster HBO is to begin filming its epic fantasy adventure series Game of Thrones in Belfast in June.

The series pilot was filmed at locations around the city.

Nine more programmes based on the first book of George R.R. Martin's multi-volume A Song of Fire and Ice series have now been commissioned."

I knew they'd made the pilot, but didn't know they'd commisioned it. As far as I know the BBC has some sort of rights to it, so it may not take it forever to show on TV over here
