Just remembered what stopped me from sleeping last night - whenever I put my head against the pillow (i.e. turning it left or right, since I was lying flat on my back), the bed, made of wood, started properly creaking and tapping, and the noises got progressively louder until I snapped my head up from the pillow to stare straight at the ceiling. Really fucking scary.
It must have been the bed creaking against the wall (it's a sleigh-type bed, so it's only touching the wall at two points) and moving subtly with my pulse, creating the tapping effect. I'm sure if I wasn't so scared and tired, I would have thought it was really cool.
