90's Gothic Death/Doom recommendations

Postby metaldinosaur » Fri Apr 09, 2021 9:06 pm

This is a pretty specific request for recommendations in a relatively niche style. Back in my late teens and early 20's i was really obsessed with MDB, Paradise Lost, Anathema, Tiamat and Katatonia.

Recently I started listening to Celestial Season's debut from 94 (?) and it really has that same feeling. Its peaked my interest in that style again and now I'm looking for recommendations with that same feeling. FYI, I do know a fair bit of this stuff, but I'm still interested to know what people like so I won't make a long list of what I already have/know.

It's clean vocals but I really enjoy The Foreshadowing. Particularly the Days of Nothing album is one of my fav albums of the genre.

Fire in the Distance's - Echoes from a deep November from last year is one of the best in recent years in my opinion.

It's more of classical music with death vocals but I used to listen to a band called Angizia back in the 90s

Have you heard this before?

Don't be put off by the band name, album title, song titles or artwork  all are incredibly misleading  it's not grindcore / death metal, it's melodic doom / death in the vein of Paradise Lost...

Thats perfect! Awesome! I'd never heard of Angizia before.

I do have a couple of foreshadowing albums, they are pretty good.

Glad to help. I bought their first 3 albums on cd. Their third album wasn't as good, can't remember why but you've inspired me to get the cds out so will find out soon enough. I lost interest after that and have no idea what happened to them.

I'm sure they are on your radar but In The Woods can be a bit gothic. I went to a London gig in 1996 that was headlined by In The Woods with Katatonia supporting, there was only about 50 people there ha ha. I remember Katatonia playing Funeral Wedding!

Yes, I always liked In the Woods, Omino in particular is great. However, I've never seen them live. Really want to though. If Katatonia were playing that stuff it must have seen a while back! (Though they do occasionally break an old one out from time to time- or they did in the 00's)
